Michel Buylen (Gand °1953) est un peintre dont la personnalité aux multiples facettes ne cesse d’intriguer par sa virtuosité époustouflante et le regard novateur qu’il pose sur les sujets éternels et fondateurs: le nu (le dénudé?), l’enfance, le paysage, les marines comme abstraction obligée et le portrait, compromis et confrontation. Michel Buylen est tout sauf un artiste conventionnel. Les acryliques lui permettent de traduire la vie dans toutes ses ressources et nuances ; il l’enrichit d’une vision personnelle. Chaque œuvre est une fenêtre ouverte sur une réalité sublimée, parfois poétique et émouvante, souvent distante et insolite. Cette conjugaison de beauté fragile et de mystère font de Buylen un artiste unique dans le paysage culturel belge. Cette publication, une coproduction d’Editions Snoeck, de la Kunstplatform Zebrastraat, et de la galerie De Zwarte Panter, Anvers, montre une sélection d’une soixantaine d’acryliques, peintes entre 2004 et 2010. Michel Buylen (Ghent °1953) is a multi-faceted and headstrong painter, who never ceases to astonish with both his amazing virtuosity and his new take on centuries-old subjects; such as the nude (or the naked?), the child, the landscape, the sea as an obligate abstraction and the portrait as compromise and confrontation. Michel Buylen is anything but a conventional artist. Aided by acrylic, he succeeds in retranslating life, in all its diversity and nuances, enriching it with his own vision. Each new work forms a window to a sublimated reality, sometimes poetic and moving, often distant and surprising. It is this combination of vulnerable beauty and mysterious estrangement that gives Buylen a unique place within Belgium’s contemporary art scene. This publication, a collaboration of Snoeck Piblishers, Kunstplatform Zebrastraat, Ghent, and Galerie De Zwarte Panter, Antwerp, presents a selection of 60 acrylic paintings on panel, created between 2004 and 2010.
