CONTEMPORARY ABORIGINAL ART

Collection catalogue

Georges Petitjean

Contemporary Aboriginal Art: the Dutch collections provides an overview of contemporary Australian Aboriginal art through the prism of the best pieces in the collections associated with the AAMU. The works exemplify the art of disparate geographical areas and of a number of individual artists. The political, historical and socio-economic contexts that have impacted on the development and dissemination of the art will also be outlined. More than a museum catalogue, Contemporary Aboriginal Art: the AAMU Collection and Dutch collections on loan provides a work of reference for Aboriginal art in the Netherlands and Europe. AAMU – Museum for Contemporary Aboriginal Art, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the only museum in Europe entirely devoted to Australian Aboriginal art. Since it was opened to the public in 2001, various exhibitions have illuminated different aspects of contemporary Aboriginal art. These have not only presented different disciplines within this fascinating art, a number of exhibitions have also put the art into the broader context of contemporary world art. This was achieved by displaying Aboriginal art alongside other art. Since the museum’s founding the original collection has been supplemented for exhibitions by loans from various other Dutch private and institutional collections, such as those of the Groninger Museum, the Wereldmuseum (Rotterdam) and the collections of the universities of Groningen and Nijmegen. The in-house AAMU collection and the other collections on loan form the basis of this book.
