CATHERINE THE GREAT

Art for Empire

Edited by Nathalie Bondil

Thanks to an agreement with the Hermitage Museum in Saint-Petersburg – one of the world’s most celebrated art institutions – the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Gallery of Toronto mount an exhibition highlighting the extraordinary treasures collected y Catherine the Great (1729-1796). These include paintings (by Chardin, Bourdon, Le Lorrain, Tiepolo, Vien and Boucher among others), jewellery, precious stones, furniture, architectural models and many other priceless objects. Catherine II, Empress of Russia, was the greatest art collector and patron of the 18th century. She believed in the political dimension of art, and was convinced of its fundamental role in changing Russia, both socially and culturally. The 220 works and objects in this catalogue, most of which have never been shown in North America, reveal the grandeur of her ambitions.

L'art populaire indien / Indian popular culture

Jyotindra Jain

Indomania, Indian Popular Culture, offers a critical viewing of the role played by popular india imagery of the 19th and 20th centuries in the construction of cultural, social and national identities. The exhibition shows how the influence of the colonial schools of art and theatre, the circulation of European paintings on the Indian market, the appearance of new techniques like photograph contributed to the renewal of the Indian illustrated language. A thematic way to return account of an artistic, social and ideological movement or how India, by the images, left to the conquest of the world. Indomania, l

Robert Capa

A look ahead

Sandrine Carneroli, John G. Morris, Patricia d’Orey

"A Look Ahead" traces the extraordinary career of the famous war reporter through a wide range of duotone photos, many of which have remained unpublished. It also shows how Robert Capa unleashed a revolution in the press world as co-founder of the agency Magnum. Father of author's rights in photography, witness to the great events of his time, he never sought sensation but rather to convey his vision of the world. Capa's life, which was filled with exceptional encounters and intense moments, ended tragically when he was just forty years old. Edited and composed in close collaboration with Magnum Photos, this book is a reflection on the role of photojournalism in the media, both yesterday and today. 1st Edition

Tussen Huid en Orgasme - Between Skin and Orgasm

Het alchemistisch lichaam - The alchemic body

Roland Patteeuw

How do artists treat polarities, how do they go about achieving equilibrium? Between skin and orgasm goes in search of the sources of creativity, of life itself. In the dreamy spaces of Bruges’ Belfry, you go on an exciting journey past spectacular video projections, drawings, photographs and unforgettable installations by (amongst many others) Pipilotti Rist, Man Ray, Zhang Huan, Ingrid Mwangi, Yves Netzhammer and Charles Sandison, Claire Roudenko - Bertin, Anke Schäfer, James Lee Byars, Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven and many others. All these artists show their vision of the ‘alchemistic body’ in a direct and intelligible manner. You are invited to look with your whole body, to go in search of physical and mental equilibrium – orgasm.
