Anne Vanraes

How do you deal with the news that a family member or friend is incurably ill ? What goes through your head when you are sitting again in the hospital counting down, oscillating between hope and despair ? Hobby photographer Anne Vanraes was told that her youngest brother had cancer. A healthy 25-year old chap was suddenly incurably ill. The series of visits to the hospital turned out endlessly long. Anne wandered around the Ghent University Hospital while waiting and expressed her emotions with images. With a feeling of impotence and disbelief and choking with emotion, she took photos to make the waiting bearable. Photography helped her to see the world in another light and to sort out or just to distract her thoughts.
